So i'm taking psychology this month. My teach posed a question.

You're in a dark alley. At the end of the dark alley there is are two men, one with a suit and tie, the other a bum. Which one is more likely to kill/rape/hurt you?

The man with the suit and tie. He would most likely be searching for things to prove he is more dominant. He would most likely want to prove that male is the dominant sex.

85% of my class thought it would be the bum. But as C-man said the suit is more likely. He's trying to look good to distract you from his true intentions. I asked her why the hell would you be in a dark alley anyway. lol.

Exactly.

I mean from what I know... it would be the bum.

#1.. a guy in a suit in an alley... you know he's trouble.. mobster... Godfather style :p

or it could be a guy in a suit trying to trick you.. but he'd have to be a smart criminal to go that far.

The bum to me would be more dangerous... why? probably would bug you.. for cash... or attack you and take something.

well, the Bum would just be annoying and dirty, but the only reason a man in a suit and tie would probably only be there doing something illegal that you walked in on, which would end badly for you.

def. teh man in teh suit and tie. you gotta think to yourself. your in a dark alley. at the end is a bum and a sharp dressed man.. whats the sharp dressed man doing there.. especially next to abum.. so my answer is the man in the suit. a bum is too tired and hungry to want to rape you.. all he'll do is pester you for some change.. but the man in tehsuit.. well.. again. man in suit + dark alley = probably something bad.

most people with assume the bum though, due to the fact that he is ..well a bum.. he has nothing to lose and maybe get arrested. they will see the manin the suit and assume. well he is nicely dressed what will eh do to me.. he is dressed too nice..

i took 2 psych classes ..one in art school to study the psych of marketing and advertsing, and another at ccac(community college).. general stuff..

if the guy in the suit wanted to rape... why do it? he's probably got money and can hit up the local streets for someone...

the question just seems lame.. no offence.

#1 why would a girl walk through a dark alley...
#2 why would you take a chance? EVERYONE or ANYONE could be a rapist/killer etc... why would you look into an area and say.. "hmm who is less likely to rape or hurt me on this street" Technically anyone could.. reguardless of they're look, color, style, etc.. etc...

Although.. it just makes a good way of thinking about it. It just seems like a non-realistic question.

The point was to show how you view ppl from a psychological way. Instead of assuming about a person by the way they look you should critically think the possibilities through. But you have to remember that college question aren't always smart.

If I ever walked near an alley and say a sillouette of anything, I'd be on the other side of the road in seconds. No way would I go in far enough to tell if it was a bum or not.

This really brings an interesting question, and it makes you think. That's what I like about it. It gives you something to think about and how life can be. It also proves that stereotypes are not always true. Not that someone would really be walking through an alleyway, a female alone. Or that a man with a suit and tie with a bum just happened to be with him.. It's more so the thought that comes into it.
I agree with all of you. That the man with the suit and tie may look nice but his demeanor is of horribleness. The bum is looking horrible and dirty but he may be the nicest person you meet. Because of what he went through changed his view on life. The guy with the tie must be making money, and might be blinded on life due to what he does. Thats another way of looking at it as well.

It makes me want to hear more Pysch. questions. I love this kind of stuff.

I actually think this is a pretty good question, I love Psychology.

Now. I agree with Kitten, this is not exactely about the dark alley or the people described. It's about the judgements we make about people we don't know. And it's a fact that a good looking, well dressed person looks more trustworthy than a person who's not like that. But that doesn't mean a thing, we all have qualities and flaws no matter what your social condition is.

So we learn 2 lessons here:

1. Don't judge anyone you don't know, maybe it's the nicest person in the world or maybe it's awful.

2. Don't trust anyone you don't really know. Perhaps your nice neighbour is a psycho. Ahhh, scary, isn't it, but true.

Of course we can't live in fear that something might happen round every corner. Just learn to be cautious in our judgements. I happen to be very good at that, ha.

One more thing, if the situation described by Dae was real... just follow E.V.'s advice, and I quote:

If I ever walked near an alley and say a sillouette of anything, I'd be on the other side of the road in seconds. No way would I go in far enough to tell if it was a bum or not.

Lol, I would totally do that!!

OH SNAP I GAVE QUOTED COMMENTS?!

anyway it also depends on the location. If you're in New York, the bum would be fine, cause he'd probably be Bob the Friendly Hobo, and he's cool. BUt if you're in somewhere like Nebraska, the suit and tie guy probably wouldn't do anything because Nebraska is full of bible freaks. I think that's nebraska....

Ok i got another question. When is the best time to teach children right and wrong?

I think the earlier you start teaching a childrent the right from the wrong the better, normally at the age of about 2 to 2 and a half, especially when they are starting to go through their troublesome two's

They say that it varies. Statistics found that as soon as your child know how to do bad which is about 6 to 12 months, is the time to start correction. Parents who start around this time usually do well with there children as they grow up.

I think it would be the guy with the tie. cuz you know its unexpected, you could be watchen out for the bum and then BAM!!!!!!! the man with the tie attacks you

and for the other Q i'd say when they are old enough to understand it. I mean look at most of us we still dont understand whats right and whats wrong. look at most of our relationships.

I beg to differ in some ways.. I think the older ones here know a lot more or have more experience now knowing right from wrong.
