straight from yahoo:

Has your Xbox 360 ever failed unexpectedly? If it has, you're in good company -- in February, warranty company SquareTrade pegged the console's failure rate at a shocking 16%. But a stunning new expose claims that Microsoft knew over two-thirds of the consoles produced by its contracted factories in the run-up to the Xbox 360's November 2005 launch date were faulty, and opted to push the machine out to consumers in spite of its problems.

The report, published this week in VentureBeat and written by technology journalist Dean Takahashi -- author of the critically acclaimed The Xbox 360 Uncloaked -- blames numerous factors for the now-infamous "Red Ring of Death" failures, including a rushed design process, the machine's groundbreaking complexity, and cost-cutting initiatives that hamstrung quality assurance tests.

As one anonymous source told Takahashi, "There were so many problems, you didn't know what was wrong. The [test engineers] didn't have enough time to get up and running."

Even though Microsoft eventually extended the Xbox 360's warranty program in an effort to reassure consumers, incurring an estimated $1 billion bill in the process, public confidence in the Xbox 360 was harmed immeasurably. Many online reports indicated purchasers had to go through four or more replacement machines before receiving one that worked, and Microsoft amassed a "bone yard" of 500,000 broken consoles in the process, Takahashi claims.

They knew about it, but wanted to get ahead of ps3...

PS3 did the smart thing and waited it out. They wanted a non buggy product, rather than beat the market out with a PS3.

I wish Microsoft did or does the same.. I rather wait and have a GOOD product, than get it fast and have it die on me.

Luckly I didn't get one recently.

I've been hearing about tons of them dying over the last 2 months.

I hear the newer ones are "supposed" to be better. It just sucks when you buy a product and it dies on you. I heard they also UPed! the warranty by 3-4 years?

Microsoft must have known something was wrong with them. Their fail rate is too high for them to have not known. They just wanted to get it out before the PS3 and then hope that by the time the PS3 came out the faults would have all been fixed by then but even then it hasn't worked.

Even this morning my sisters BF had his 4th RROD 18 months.

Well I think they make more money this way. So, they have to fix a bunch of broken xbox's.... big deal.. they sell enough and make good profit.

They know some people will still keep or try to fix the xbox on their own. Not only that, some people's warranty expired. It's a smart, but dirty way of making money.

Also I think that is one of the ways they can also go around saying "Hey look we are outselling the PS3 by miles". You know I really would like to ask from now on every single person who is buying a 360 and asking if it is their first or are they replacing a red ring.

haha agreed. That should be the 1st question you ask any 360 user. "Nice 360, so is this your 5th one?" lol. Literally... that's a truthful question to ask.

I haven't seen many PS3's go down yet, or even any Wii's.

Bill gates is smart... he did the same thing with Windows and he's rich now. It's a dirty strategy, but it works. :(

With windows he actually got away with many violation of Copyright laws that if he had not become mega rich he would be extremely poor paying out to other companies.

Microsoft did know, but they had to deliver otherwise they would have been boxed out before they could even start ;)

Btw, you guys all mention Bill Gates etc.. but he stepped down ages ago? It's not really about him anymore =p Either way, at least he also did a good thing with all the money he made, more then 99% of all the other rich people on the world ;)

I'm happy I didn't grab one Xmas time.. they were cheap bundles for sale. I know one guy got one and when he got home the RROD hit him :D

I hear the NEW Jasper 360's are supposed to hit up the market soon? Apparently they use way way less power and the chances of them over heating are a lot lower?

Are you serious? The Jasper ones came out last december here, they are planning to get a new one out called Valhalla, wich should be a bit cooler and uses less power(45nm).

With the new chip their planning to give new looks to the Xbox, either a Slim version or a whole new design.

Slim version would be nice.

BTW, isn't the Jasper 45nm?? That's what I heard... hence what were waiting for. I think the Jasper's on already in warehouses, but not on store shelves yet.

No the Jasper version is still on 65nm, the Valhalla (unified GPU/CPU) will be 45nm.
Jasper came out around August in most places, but in Netherland it was in the shops in December.
