actually, it was 9 or 10, since one was neither dead or alive.
And he was kept alive for 1 of 2 reasons. 1, and most well known, he got a disease that screwed up his nervous system by an overdose of radiation, and the second, he is believed to be a member from a SPARTAN 1 project and the disease is a cover up.

My bad. I haven't played Halo in forever. When I said Covenant I had the Flood on my mind. Oh well. Same with the Prophets. Had the Prophets on mind and thought they were called the Oracles.
