I think the reason is, illegal use of THEIR product. I see where your coming from, but a lot of people hate to have their product misused, even if you paid for it.

Kinda like the vBulletin, if you host copyright stuff, they will delete your licence. Much like that, where you CAN USE their product. Just not in a illegal/bad representing way.

Yeah, that's pretty much it, but I hate it. Once you pay for something you should be able to do just about whatever you want with it.

Yeah, where I can see what Gimpy's saying as a good point, I also find slight differences in what we're talking about. vBulletin is a piece of software which you have to have a license to use, correct? Implying you don't have " ownership " of the item, atleast in the entirety of the word, because there is still a string attached which could cause your license to be revoked. However, with something like a console gaming system, that's almost like Mercedes Benz saying you can't tune up their vehicles to perform better upon ownership. While I understand the differences in this comparison too, mod chips are not necessarily always used for piracy; what they are used for is determined by the user. What ticks me off even more is that they're in trouble for selling the HDLoader software, as well. Once again, using a HDD in your console can be for backing up games that you own and don't want to have to stop playing when the discs get scratched to death.

Bottom line, if Sony doesn't want people using modchips/softmods, they should take the billions of dollars they horde and develop better prevention of piracy ;D

I agree.. but the problem is, people ABUSE their freedom. Like you said, NOT all people use the chip for illegal use... BUT.. LOTS still do... that's the issue. If people didn't or illegal use was at a low, they might not care. They are ONLY reacting back, because TOO MUCH illegal use is happening, to a point where they have to say "hey... we need to do something now, our work is being used in too many illegal ways, by too many people"

yeah I know... I just don't like it. It's not fair to take away freedom to do something like that just cause it can potentially be used illegally. It's not like mod chips are deadly weapons... They just stop a few companies from making what is only a couple extra bucks compared to what they already make.
And what the hell happened to the right to make backups? We can no longer backup things just because some rich ass companies are afraid they'll lose a few dollars. I say if they're not going to let us backup things, then they should be required to replace a disc if it gets to the point where it doesnt work, is stolen, or anything like that where a backup could save the day. If they're going to take away rights to do something, then they should be required to compensate for that.
