It's mostly because of quality control issues, but.... well.... I wouldn't be surprised if half the viruses out there are created just to keep the anti-virus industry alive.

Seems like lots of viruses are hidden in programs. A lot of them in free programs, which we think are safe and trustable!

Well what did you expect? I wouldn't be surprised if they have a backdoor in there too.
