PS3 Sony has lost over $3 billion on the PS3

Thought this was quite surprising.

Think you paid too much for your Playstation 3? Don't expect any sympathy from Sony.

In the company's fiscal 2008 annual report, Sony revealed that they've now lost roughly $3.3 billion (that's billion with a B) on the Playstation 3 since its launch. That breaks down to $2.16 billion in 2007, followed by a notably smaller but equally daunting $1.16 billion loss in 2008.

The reason? Pricing the console below its production cost. That's right - that hefty $599 you paid for the PS3 back when it first launched was significantly cheaper than the cost of producing it in the first place, and while the retail price has come down some, the losses keep piling up.

I was surprised.. I saw a 80GB ps3 cheap as heck at a kiddy store. It was at least $100 cheaper than bestbuy etc...

I think it was $399 CDN.

PS3 HAS to keep a competitive prices.. hence why their losing profit. The wii and 360 are as good almost.

Thats probably the reason there releasing that 80 gig PS3, they think there gonna get more cash of people.

As for the 80.. it's down now. Every story starting today is selling it at $399.99. Huge price drop now.

I don't think the ps3 is gonna fall any lower than $400 CDN. The PS2 right now cost 199.99.

So, I doubt they can lower the ps3 price down.
