Star Wars: The Force Unleashed

Publisher: LucasArts
Developer: Krome Studios
Platform: PlayStation Portable · Genre: Action
Release Date: 09/16/08

This entry in the Star Wars saga casts players as Darth Vader's "Secret Apprentice", unveiling new revelations about the Star Wars galaxy. The expansive story, created under direction from George Lucas, is set during the largely unexplored era between Star Wars: Episode III Revenge of the Sith and Star Wars: Episode IV A New Hope. Based on the next-gen game but containing unique gameplay designed for PlayStation Portable, the game has players as this new mercenary villain assisting Vader in his quest to rid the universe of Jedi - and face decisions that could change the course of their

January 25, 2008 - There's quite possibly no bigger license in the known universe than Star Wars. From the movies to books to comics to action figures to LEGO toys to, of course, videogames, the Force is everywhere. Considering how much content there is out there, it can be considered an especially big deal when Lucasfilm deems a piece of fiction to be the next official chapter in the saga, making it an essential piece of the universe. That piece of fiction would be Star Wars: The Force Unleashed, LucasArts' highly anticipated, Force-laden action romp.

While Lucasarts handles the PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360 versions of the game internally, Krome Studios has been tasked with bringing the PSP (and PS2 and Wii) versions to life. The game features the same story elements that its big brothers do, telling the tale of Lord Vader's secret apprentice sometime between the events in Episode III and IV.

Being that the PlayStation Portable doesn't have the processing power of the PS3 or 360, the game obviously can't rely on the DMM or euphoria tech of those versions. Instead, Krome has made good use of good ol' fashioned rigid body physics to take care of the effects work, and the result is quite impressive on the system.

It's not a real screen, but it's pretty.
Though we weren't able to see any of the more complex story locales, the areas that we did see run silky smooth and looked great to boot. The animation quality was quite high, and everything reacted in a fairly realistic manner. Krome looks to have done a great job bringing the look and feel of the game to the PSP.

The PSP version of the game will have its own unique set of features. Firstly, there's Ad-Hoc multiplayer for up to four players. Three modes will be present, including Force Frenzy (Deathmatch), Force Out (Deathmatch on a small platform) and Rule the Galaxy (King of the Hill).

What is seemingly the coolest exclusive content by far is Historic Mode. The game features five classic scenes from the Star Wars films, and you're able to play them with the enhanced powers from Force Unleashed. For example, you can play as Vader as he takes on Luke in the Cloud City carbonite chamber, and make use of things like Force Lightning or Force Choke. Players will be able to take on Mace Windu on Geonosis as he takes out a number of androids and eventually faces off with Jango Fett, or play through a section on Jabba's barge.

You'll have to trust us when we say the actual game looks nice.
The Force Unleashed promises to constantly reward you over the course of its progression. Force Points can be spent to upgrade your existing Force powers, making them stronger, giving them wider affect arcs or something similar. You can also spend these to upgrade your health or energy meters, or pick up new combo attacks. Each level in the game will reward you with a new Force power of some sort, and you'll be able to unlock new characters for use in the game's online modes.
