Well, bayonets no longer serve their purpose because enemies gain little advantage by getting close in real life. Most likely you both have guns and they both are probably extremely acurate from a hundred or so feet away. At the time when bayonets were in common use soldiers could charge the battlefield between reloading (which could take a while) and engage in close combat. A useful addition was the blade on the end of the weapon to fight when they approached. A Marine using a bayonet could more easily repel a zergling which can get in close very quickly.

Post Script: After searching I have found that bayonts are still used for close combat in modern times, though not as commonly.

That would just make you day wouldn't it? If Tychud Findlay does not have a shield, I doubt Raynor would. But, then again, I doubt Raynor would even be a Marine still. They are the lowliest rank of the Terrans, including common criminals.

Then again, all of the Terrans that started these colonies were shipped off because they were "undesirables". That means Duke, Raynor, and even Mengsk were all criminals awaiting death sentences at one point.

I doubt that. Its not like they were shipped from earth a decade ago. it was more like a century ago. they are second and third generation of their convict ancestors. just cause ur dad is a criminal doesnt mean you're one.

and on the bayonet thing....a zergling, according to the cinematics, appear to be made completely out of bone. fat lot of use a bayonet would do against a bone devil that has been melee fighting since it was born. Do you think the marines would look better using bayonets in some old WW1 movie or the way they slugged it out on the amerigo?

well that make a certain person with larvae avatar dance for joy...although i heard that they're gonna make the shield an upgrade that increases marine hp. im keeping my fingers crossed for the former.
