Killing discs sometimes happens when people have the system standing vertically. PS2s sorta had the same problem, but it wasn't quite as bad. (at least I don't think it happens when the 360 is horizontal unless you hit the system with a hammer or something) The disc drive itself, however, can sometimes break (I don't think the problem is as widespread as the RROD though... and I'm not sure if it happens in the new models)
The RROD.... is still possible.... just less likely.
